WAR FM  Standard Shipping

What?
WAR FM is an emergency radio that questions the war rhetorics of the government.

Is it your duty as citizen to prepare for war? That is the question WAR FM poses. The Dutch government invests billions extra in NATO and urges citizens to stock up on supplies, including an emergency radio. It promotes a rhetoric where war seems inevitable, unless we keep paying: to defense, to the arms industry, to our own fear. Why doesn’t peace seem like the goal anymore? This spring-loaded radio responds to this logic: a playful parcel that carries a heavy weight. It’s stuck on a single frequency that only plays “WWIII” by Abel and Sef. In doing so, the work turns the question back on us: is this really the future we want to be preparing for?

Cardboard, plywood, metal, electronics, paint, and found objects.

About the project
I was asked to create a design for Standard Shipping: a  challenge where products are created that will fit in standard shipping boxes which fit through a letter box.

The idea of the challenge was to make participating in design festivals more accessible by avoiding expensive shipping costs as well as using smaller event foot print.
